Avalanche warning for region Svalbard øst Sunday 15.01.2023

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
Heavy snowfall and an increase in wind will lead to a large amount of wind transported snow. Avoid all avalanche terrain. Naturally triggered avalanches likely.
  • The danger is greatest until Sunday afternoon

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4). Remote triggering is possible.

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

NB! Varselet er basert på et enklere datagrunnlag enn regionale varsler og utgis kun for faregrad 4 og 5.
Mye nysnø og svært kraftig vind vil danne store fokksnøflak i leheng som kan løsne naturlig når været står på.
I terreng over ca. 300 moh må vedvarende svake lag i snødekket tas med i betraktning. Skredløp forventes å bli uvanlig lange og det må legges inn ekstra stor sikkerhetsmargin til alt skredterreng.

Vind og nedbør ventes å minke fra søndag ettermiddag.
